The Summer of Love: A High School DxD Primer

Hey guys.

The Summer of Love, a three month examination and look into the series High School DxD begins next week with the first six episodes. Before that though I wanted to throw up a post talking about some common questions and give an overview of what’s to come. Let’s get into it after the cut!

I’m starting to get really excited for this.

Do you really think that High School DxD, an ecchi show is worth all of this examination?

Yes I do.

Now look, High School DxD is an ecchi show. It’s a show about big bouncing titties, smoking hot babes and cute butts. No matter what I say, no matter what I point out concerning the characters and themes, no matter how much I and other gush about how great this show is. High School DxD is first and foremost a show about naked busty girls falling in love with an idiot. It is VITALLY important that viewers understand what the core of this show is. Once you do that, you’ll be able to enjoy it beyond the shameless and proud fan-service. There is much more to High School DxD than the boobs and butts, but that remains the very foundation of his show.

Are you watching the Japanese or the English Version?

While I love the English dub, and consider it to be in some ways superior to the Japanese, I’ll be watching the show subtitled. This is because the English dub plays a little lose with their script adaptation and I want the most authentic experience of the show.

Is the English Dub Worth Watching?

Absolutely. Fucking absolutely. The English Dub of High School DxD is one of the best English dubs of an anime around and helps a lot of the humor land with English viewers. The voice actors all bring their A-game to this show, especially Jad Saxton whose performance as Koneko is actually superior to the Japanese version. I was very torn on whether or not to go subs or dubs, but the dub of this show is how I prefer to watch it. Expect a post about the dub later in June.

How many episodes are you watching at time?

I will be dividing each season of High School DxD, four in total into batches of six episodes per season. That means I’ll be talking about one season per month, with the August being a double dose of both the third and fourth season.

So what is the schedule if you have one?

This is not ironclad, something will probably screw this up, but the layout of the Summer of Love is below. Also I welcome any fellow bloggers who want to take part in a joint post on the non episode weeks to contact me! I’d love to get additional opinions!

September

Final reflection on the series.

Why not just binge the series a season at a time? Or review episode by episode.

There a couple reasons for this. One is that I want to avoid burn out by watching the entire series. There are only so many oppai a man can handle. Secondly I have always disliked episode to episode reviews of shows because they don’t allow either myself or viewers to get a whole view of a story arc. Furthermore reviewing the whole season at once prevents me from covering everything that happens. So one story arc at a time seems about right.

Do you really think High School DxD is one of the “Great Works of Anime?”

Yes I do, or I think that it is the closest the harem and ecchi genre has to a great work. I look forward to watching the series again to see if that holds up!

Whose best girl?

There is no best girl, but the girls in order from best to least best are: Akeno, Koneko, Asia, Xenovia, Rias, Rosseweise, Ravel, Irina.

Are you going to examine the characters in depth?

I’ve already posted two character dives on Issei and Rias, the two main leads of the story. However I’m going to re-dive into both of these characters later on in July and August. My character dives on them are still good and I stand by them, but the video clips are getting harder to maintain. I look forward to giving them a second glance. As for the rest of the cast, expect some discussion about them through my look into each season, but probably not a character dive.

Can we see that cute GIF of Koneko shaking her booty?

Do you think High School DxD will get a fifth season?

God I fucking hope so. I’ve said it before, but I am fine with no more anime seasons being made if they just finish the Issei story arc they are currently on. That’s the best place for the series to end anime-wise if they need to. The series still sells very well, and is damn popular, so I have hope. Apparently it was suppose to have an announcement this year, but was held back for some reason. If I had to put a number to it, I’m probably 60/40 that we get a new season, but I am keeping my expectations firmly in check. It was a bloody miracle we got season 4, and sometimes you gotta be happy with what you get.

Anything else you wanna talk about while you’re here?

I’m probably going to do a shallow dive on Bible Black before this year is out.

I’m serious. That shit is happening. Someone on WordPress has to be the hentai guy, so fuck it. I’ll do it.

    • It’s true. There are others that do have better fanservice, even…that show… has better ecchi. But High School DxD has ecchi AND compelling characters and story. Normally it’s one or the other.

      • Hey man, I welcome discourse and discussion. All these things are subjective. This show isn’t for everyone, and no it is not perfect, but it’s still damn good! I look forward to seeing what you think.

  1. “This is because the English dub plays a little lose with their script adaptation and I want the most authentic experience of the show.”

I’ve watched both, and FWIW, I think you’re making the right call for the right reasons.

“There are only so many oppai a man can handle.”

Sadly, we can’t all be the Oppai Dragon.

“Secondly I have always disliked episode to episode reviews of shows because they don’t allow either myself or viewers to get a whole view of a story arc.”

I’m really interested to see this approach works for you. I enjoy writing episodic reviews, but there are some series whose formats make me wonder if a different approach is better.

“Can we see that cute GIF of Koneko shaking her booty?”

That’s some fine animation, that is. Gives me hope for the future.

You’re more brave than I am!

And yes, I’ll read your review!

    • Thanks Crow, I just started my watch-through and fuck is it good to be back with this show. I already got 3 pages of notes and it’s only been three episodes.

And yes, I am going to do that Bible Black review, probably sometime this summer.
