This is a weird one guys, this show has been a wild ride of feelings and opinions that have gone from one extreme to another. Let’s not waste anytime. After the cut let’s take a dive into the series Do you Love your Mom and Her Two-Hit Multi-Target Attacks?

As much as I am against hype, I have to admit that I was a little bit hyped about this show. The premise seemed like a no-brainier: an ecchi comedy staring a guy and his hot mom stuck in a video game? That shit couldn’t be more of a slam dunk, and honestly there are times when it really hits. The first handful of episodes of Two-Hit Mom are honestly exactly what I wanted it to be. The comedy is on point, the characters are click and the ecchi hijinks are absolutely on point. The show fully commits to the idea of of the Mommy MMO RPG. Scenes like male lead Masato using his anime logic to resident tsundere Wise are fucking hilarious, and the anime quote of the year is absolutely going to be “Mommy is wearing a thong today!”

However Two-Hit Mom feels like it blew most of its (heh) load in the first few episodes, as the remainder never bring the same ecchi comedy as those first few episodes. It has been said that some shows that often front-load the fanservice and ecchi and then pull back, just to hook viewers in. I honestly feel that is the way Two-Hit Mom ends up going, because there isn’t much in the way of the comedy and ecchi after that. That is disappointing, it would have been so easy for this show to be a just one gag after another and the fact that it doesn’t go that way is honestly shocking. On that fact alone I would be willing to call the show the biggest disappointment of 2019. It can feel very much like a knock-off of Konosuba, but with none of the heart that show is able to bring.
But….
What surprised me, was where Two-Hit Mom actually worked really well, and that was the plot. The story line of moms playing the game with their children to try and repair their relationship was something I just viewed as window dressing for the comedy, but since the comedy and the ecchi aren’t present, it falls back to the plot to carry the show, which it does quite well. While it isn’t anything special, Two-Hit Mom’s exploration of the relationship between children and their mothers often tugged at my heartstrings and made me actually sit and think. The relationship between Wise and her mother, one of regret and anger that her entire life now has to revolve around her daughter felt realistic (as much as anime can be). Medhi’s mother, the dreaded helicopter parent and the stress and emotional damage that it inflicts on her is something I can personally empathize with and there several moments during her story arc that I honestly really felt for Medhi, which wasn’t something that i expected from this anime.

Furthermore, the character of Mamako feels like someone with a degree of hidden depth and character that I really want to see more. While she is very much a walking meme machine, pretty much ‘Ara Ara’ made human flesh, I found myself getting more and more interested in her character and motivations. While she is absolutely a doting (almost suffocating) mother to her son Masato, there seems to be a degree of regret and eagerness to do so. A moment later in the series gives a hint that Mamako’s reasons for being so love might be deeper than we expect. I personally think she comes from a loveless family herself and showers Masato with affection because she doesn’t want him to grow up like she did. I may completely (and probably am) wrong about that theory, but I can’t help but wonder about the hidden depths of this show, which is something I NEVER expected.

Do you Love your Mom and Her Two-Hit Multi-Target Attacks? wasn’t what I wanted it be, at least the whole way through. However what it became made me like it for different reasons, and it’s plots involving the other girls and their mom do really hit home for me, and a bunch of other viewers. Yet despite that, I can’t help that this anime front-loaded it’s comedy at the start and then attempted to ride off the fumes until the end. It is a show that never hits the depths of bad this was Master of Ragnarok, but it never really jumps up over “slightly above average” Perhaps the uncensored version in a few months will change my mind, and I will absolutely be giving this show a second look after some time has passed. Still, out of the four Isekai that came out this season, I have to say that Two-Hit Mom was probably the best of the four. Give it a look if you are so inclined and you might enjoy it for the reasons you didn’t expect. I know I did.

You are far kinder than me.

I think you captured why this show surprised me so much.
I could stand another season of Wise, too.
