Re-Dive: Sense of Values of Wine: Wholesome Hentai

I’m no stranger when it comes to talking about hentai on this blog. Most of the time it’s for fun and laughs, but I do believe there are legit good pieces of art and entertainment to come out of the genre, even if it is 100% just porn. While people may not engage with it, it is as part of the genre as anything else, and it should be looked at with fair eyes and clear judgment.

I’ve spoke about this series before, and even did a shallow dive on it, however as my skills as a blogger have grown, I wanted to come back and give this series a second look, because I felt that I didn’t really dive too much into it. So join me after the cut as I take a Re-Dive into Fuuga’s hentai manga: Sense of Values of Wine.

((IT’S A GOD DAMN HENTAI, EXPECT NSFW PICTURES RIGHT UP AHEAD))

Sense Title
Cute Story, Cuter Butt

Hentai is not known for it’s plot, in fact over 85% of the hentai out there is pretty much just a montage of sex scenes. However there are a few series, mostly in the manga realm, where they attempt to tell a coherent story and have oodles of sex in there as well. FUUGA is one of those creators, and his stories often mix solid sex with above average writing, and Sense of no exception. The story is relatively simple, but the strength comes from the two lead characters. The male lead Hayato Kaaya is the class president, and a bit of a slacker, more concerned with his video games then anything else. Nanami Wakase meanwhile is the young teacher who is struggling to maintain her freedom while being forced into an endless cycle of marriage meetings, all of them always ending up going no where.

Sense 1
The banter between Nanami and Hayato is honestly better than characters in long running anime and manga series.

Like I said last time, the hidden jewel of this series is the chemistry between the two leads. Hayato and Nanami’s relationship is laden with hidden sexual tension and desire that they play off by being dismissive and rude to each other. Nanami only seems Hayato as pet to be used for her whim, while Hayato sees his teacher as some lonely lady who gives him candy and odd-jobs to do. Despite this however, they are both comfortable with each other, and talk often about their hang-ups and issues. So many pages of the series is just these two characters talking, letting Nanami vent about her frustrations, and Hayato lovingly teasing and prodding her. There are no anime gags, no tsundere-ness, no over the top comedic violence, just two people acting as real as something from this genre allows them to be. But of course, this is a hentai and after a night of drinking wine, things end up the way you expect.

Sense 3
Being a westerner, this (very, VERY, VERY fictionalized) glimpse into how some Japanese marriages work was fascinating.

The following chapters, while having a few other stories with side characters, concern themselves with the growing affair between Nanami and Hayato, their deepening romance, and the struggles of Nanami and her pressure to get married to someone “respectable” despite the desire to live her own life. While it is a hentai, the feelings are real, raw and emotional. These two characters feel as ‘real’ and as ‘anime’ as any straight by the numbers anime romance story, and their chemistry and relationship is both touching and wholesome. There are moments of laughter, moments of sadness, moments of cuteness, and of course there are moments of lustful passion. But it works because both Hayato and Nanami just click together so damn well.

Sense 2
Everything put on the page is drawn well and erotic enough to do what it needs to do.

The sex of course is there in spades, and is presented very much by the book. Don’t expect any wild escapades here, as everything is plain vanilla sex with everything you expect. While the scenes are well drawn, they are nothing eye-popping. Unlike some artists who put all the effort into the drawings, FUUGA is more concerned with the story, and while the art is respectable, even cute in many places, there is a very much ‘less is more’ vibe, which I grew to love the more I read of the story. By the time we reach the climax and the final love scene, I was totally enraptured by what was on display, and the feelings of want, lust, and desire that both Hayato and Nanami shared for each other. It’s basic stuff at it’s core, but it doesn’t make it any less effective and powerful. Sometimes the best romance is a simple one.

Sense 4
Nanami and Hayato know they are meant to be together, that they love each other so deeply, but also that things can’t work…yet…

I absolutely love Sense of Values of Wine. It is a great tender story of romance. A tale of two people who find each other and don’t want to let go, despite people wanting to tear them apart. I’ve never really cared much for romance in anime, there are few couples that really pull me in, but for some reason I keep coming back to Sense and Hayato and Nanami. It is a smutty manga yes, but what is there is touching, heartwarming and as real as it can be. This is a wonderful little story, and for a hentai, finding something that is this heartwarming is as surprising as it was enjoyable. I highly suggest you check out this series and see if you get the same feeling.

Sense 7
Oh god, the feels…they won’t stop!
