Don’t @ Me: Seven of my Anime Opinions: Unpopular Opinion Edition

It’s Monday, which means it’s time for this usual humdinger. Welcome to Don’t @ Me, the place where, like the undeniable truth that fanservice is part of anime and you can’t get rid of it. I accidentally cop a feel on several opinions and views on everything anime. This week I thank Mari from Starting Life from Zero for the nomination for a recent blog post: Unpopular opinions! I normally don’t go negative on this blog, and I’ll try to keep this nice, but fuck it, I need something to write about today and this was perfect. Anyway, let’s get into it after the cut.

The whining over this character has eroded any amount of sympathy I had for the initial argument. Tamaki is amazing, her outfit is amazing and it should be everywhere.

A Popular Anime I Don’t Like

I have never, ever liked Food Wars: Shougeki no Souma. In fact I think it is one of the worst anime/manga to ever come out of Shonen Jump. And that is before the final arc turned off even the die hard fans. It never commits to its premise, never changes up the status quo and it’s main character is the gary-stu that people think Kirito from Sword Art Online is. Just an absolute trash piece of work.

But hey, if you like it, that’s awesome, I’m glad you do.

An Anime Everyone Hates But I Love

Probably School Days. Even after watching it, blogging about, and having a great conversation with fellow blogger Infinite Zenith about it. I just absolutely fucking love this show. I know why some people don’t like it, but it just a fascinating story about teenagers unable or unwilling to communicate. I only wish that it would get the remake treatment that Fruits Baskets and Full Metal Alchemist have.

A Love Triangle Where They Didn’t End Up With Who I Wanted

Rei and Natsuo from Domestic Girlfriend. Like holy fuck, talk about shitting the absolute fucking bed with that ending. I’ve mentioned this before, but how that manga ended is still mind shatteringly stupid. Like, the author had a clear exit route, but instead turned around and ran head first into the nearest wall.

A Popular Genre You Hardly Watch

Sports anime. I don’t think I’ve watched one…fuck..in years. I just don’t have any interest in it, mostly because it seems to be the exact same show over and over again. I don’t really have any desire, though I have heard some shows are quite good.

A Beloved Character I Dislike

Taking a page from Mari’s book. I’ll have to say Eren Yeager from Attack on Titan. He is the type of character I absolutely cant’ stand. The angry emotional teenager who cares more about his metaphorical concept of ‘freedom’ then the problems right in front of him. He does what his story asks of him, but he is just a unpleasant, rude, and angry young man with little to redeem him in my eyes. Like we get it, your mommy died, and life sucks. Handle it and stop fucking yelling.

Oh..and if you want me to pick another character that wasn’t done before. I don’t really care for Yuki from Fruits Basket either. I mean, the jury is still out on his character wraps up, but the series constant focus on his emotional problems have drowned out the rest of the (more) compelling cast members. Again, I get it, your childhood was pretty rough. Can we talk about ANOTHER character for five minutes?

A Popular Anime I Can’t Get Into/Not Interested In Watching

My Hero Academia.

Not because it’s bad, not because it’s over-hyped, but mostly because I had my fill. Something I’ve realized as I’ve examined my relationship with the shonen genre is that each generation has their one or two shows that define the genre for them, and that everything that comes after just can’t fill that void. For me it was the ‘big three’ of Naruto, Bleach and One Piece. Now that 2 of those 3 are finished, I just have no real interest in getting back on that shonen horse. It’s a shame cause again, I heard My Hero Academia is actually quite fucking good, but I had my moment, it’s time for the next generation to have theirs.

Also, there is probably never going to be another ‘big-three’ again. That was a once in a generation moment that was like lightning in a bottle. Make peace with that fact and enjoy what you have.

A Popular Anime I Prefer Over The Manga

I’m gonna cheat here and say visual novels, because I don’t read much manga.

I’m going to have to say Steins;Gate. I’ve tried twice to get into the series through the visual novel, both the original and the Elite version. Both times I get about 1/4 of the way through before just getting fucking bored. Steins;Gate, without the excellent voice acting (I watched dub) the animation, or just tighter pacing is an absolute fucking SLOG to get through. Shame really, cause the anime is one of the best science fiction stories in the entire anime landscape.

The same can be said for Unlimited Blade Works, which, since Ufotable adapted it, the source material can’t compare in the slightest. Even if they talk about Rin’s butt.
