I said in my last post that this season has given us two shows that have reminded me of how much I love the ecchi and harem genres. We’ve discussed the first one, now it is time to talk about the second. A show that took me by surprise, but am glad that it did. After the cut, let’s take a dive into the Mother of Goddess Dormitory.

Oh what joy, what pure wonderful joy.
That is how I can really sum up this series. After a year of anime where ecchi has been A) surprisingly present (Jobless Reincarnation), defiantly proud of what it is (Redo of Healer) or frustratingly absent (How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord Omega), coming to a show like Dormitory has been like drinking water after trek in the desert. Like with Hensuki before it, this show has been everything I wanted it to be, and everything it needed. A twelve episode romp filled with those classic ecchi gags and hijinks and thankfully, more than enough boobs and nipples shoved in your face.

The plot is superbly standard, and takes more than a few cues from some hentai. After Koshi’s apartment burns down, he finds himself on the street. He comes across a pink haired busty college student who offers him a place to stay at her dorm as its ‘mother’. Even better is that the rest of the tenants are all hot girls! A mad scientist, a martial arts tomboy, a cosplay obsessive and a girl who may or may not be a space alien! Throw in his tsundere, but adoring childhood friend into the mix, and you have everything you need for a classic ecchi romp.

And that is what Dormitory really is. It is standard ecchi to the very marrow of its bones. There is nothing new or special that makes it stand out. The fanservice is gloriously present, but does nothing special. The animation is standard, the characters are the standard vague archetypes, and the situations (except for a surprisingly lack of beach episode tropes), are all what you’d expect from a checklist. There is nothing interesting here, nothing that makes you stop and go “oh wow, that’s new.” Parallel Paradise and Redo of Healer this is not.

But honestly? I couldn’t fucking care. I loved this show, to the very bottom of my heart. To sit down and watch a classic ecchi, not hamstrung by adaptational choices like Omega, or too bold in its content like Redo. Just solid meat and potatoes ecchi with boobs, butts and cute girls doing cute things. To watch that after not having it for so long is a wonderful feeling, and the sheer absurdity of it was refreshing.
Mother of Goddess Dormitory, had it come out in a heavier (and better) ecchi season would have fallen by the wayside. It doesn’t have the animation or story to make it stand out, but thankfully it’s place this year has done just that. This is a fun, boob filled romp that reminds me of why I love ecchi so much: the absurdity. Because that is what it is really all about. Watching situations that would never happen in real life unfold. Where everything is above board, and there are (usually) no issues of consent, or cultural baggage. It’s not for everyone, far from it, but if you like this kind of anime, then Dormitory will give you a healthy kick of what you need. Take a look for yourself and see what you think, if only for that amazing opening song.
