The End of Evangelion: Or How I Stopped Caring and Learned to Drink the Tang

My thoughts on the main series can be found right here!

Jesus fucking Christ.

You may remember that for my third year anniversary for the blog, I decided to finally sit down and watch Neon Genesis Evangelion, easily one of the most influential and significant anime shows in history. My thoughts after it was finished ended up being an acknowledge of that legacy, but also a resounding meh. Of course I hadn’t actually watched the real ending. And ending long considered one of the most out-there, contemplative, theorized, and just ‘what the fuck’ conclusions to a story in the anime world. Now however, I have, and in honor of my first post on the series. Let’s do this right.

Welcome to Shallow Dives in Anime. This is The End of Evangelion.

Code Geass Lelouch of the Rebellion R2: What started as a Quest for Vengeance ending up with me Geassing God.

This is going to be a different type of blog post, as I’m going to be talking about the ending first, and then giving my thoughts on the rest of the season. Mostly because the ending is the one thing that people can remember from this season while the rest is… Well after the cut let’s take a dive into the second season of Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2 and see for ourselves.

Eighty-Six Second Cour: How Shin Nouzen Re-Enlisted his Groove Back

Well it sure has been a bit since we look at this haven’t we? Despite being in the closing part of 2021, 86 was a series that apparently needed a little more time to cook in the oven. With the last two episodes pushed back to March we all knew it was going to be a while before we wrapped this series. That time has finally come so after the cut, let’s take a dive into the second half of the series Eighty-Six!

My thoughts on the first half can be found right here!

Infinite Stratos 2: All around the World, Bitches are Falling for Me!

A few months back I gave you my post on Infinite Stratos, a show that is probably the go to example for a basic harem anime, and one is both beloved and unloved because of it. I went on record saying I loved the series and that despite its dumbass protagonist, over-the-top dub, and sometimes fillerish nature. I had some great gags, most of the girls were memorable, and its use of CGI remains a decade ahead of its contemporaries. A guilty pleasure for sure, but one that harem fans can be happy about. But what about the second season? Well after the cut let’s take a dive into Infinite Stratos 2 and find out!

On my Radar for Spring 2022: Sequels, Sequels, Sequels!

Hey guys.

Winter 2022 has been a very off season, with most of what is to come being held back so a certain anime can have the limelight all to itself. However those who have been patient are going to be rewarded with a massive slate of great shows. While it is a wee bit early, I want to tell you what’s on my radar for next season! Remember that this list is subject to change, but let’s get into it after the cut!

Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion: Viva le Revolution! (Sponsored by Pizza Hut)

In the annals of anime history, a show like the one we are talking about today needs to be introduced. Anyone who was around in the days of the fan-sub era will know it, for it is one of that generation’s crown jewels. An anime that invaded every pore of the medium, one that set the fandom on fire. Long before shows like Attack on Titan and Demon Slayer, and after Dragon Ball had taken its bow. There were shows like this. Join me after the cut as we take a dive into the first season of Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion.

Three Years of Shallow Dives in Anime: Neon Genesis Evangelion

Each year, we mark the anniversary of Shallow Dives in Anime with a special review. A show that for some reason or another holds a special place in my heart. It may be because it is good, or because it was bad. There may be personal reasons behind it, or it may have been something dogging my footsteps. Either way these reviews are a long time coming and ones I put a lot of thought into.

The first year I took another look at Shinmai Maou no Testament, and made peace with a show that was almost singularly responsible for getting me into blogging.

The second year I caved in and finally watched Chivalry of a Failed Knight, a show I had deeply personal reasons for avoiding.

Both shows I ended up leaving with a newfound respect, and in the case of Knight, an appreciation for. The show we are talking about this year needs no introduction, but it is something that ever since I started this blog, I knew would end up happening. A reckoning that I couldn’t run away from. A show that any anime fan worth his salt has to end up confronting, good or ill, bad or good.

Welcome to Shallow Dives in Anime. This is Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Happy times.

Infinite Stratos: On the Wings of an Idiot

I’ve watched many harems, and what I’ve noticed throughout all the good, the bad, the great and the bleh, is that at their heart. Harems are absurdist comedies. That the very idea of having one guy surrounded by a bunch of girls who all want to ride his dick is absurd. That the humor comes from the girls bouncing off each other as they try to get closer to said main character. Some shows may have action, or other plot elements, even lots of fanservice, but the very central concept is that absurdity. Take that away, try to play things seriously and you end up with either a frustrating mess ala Domestic Girlfriend, or a blood-filled massacre like School Days. It is why something like the latter is so effective, because it shows you what happens when a harem attempts to work in real life.

I say all of this, because I believe understanding what a harem anime is, and what to expect is important for enjoying them. And there is no better example than the show we are discussing today. After the cut let’s take a dive into the first season of Infinite Stratos

Sitting down with Infinite Zenith: Mobile Suit Gundam SEED

Earlier this year, I re-watched and blogged about the series Mobile Suit Gundam SEED, a show by all accounts I loved a lot growing up. Going back to it I found it was still a great piece of entertainment. My friend Infinite Zenith thought so as well, and we’ve recently sat down and a had a real back and forth on the series. That conversation is up on his blog, but I want to toss a link here in case you missed it. It was a fun conversation and I hope you will find it that way too!

Check out our post right here!
